Common Name: Foxtail Palm
The recently described foxtail palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) is from Cape York, Queensland. This beautiful native palm is named after Wodyeti, the last male Aboriginal with traditional knowledge of the Bathurst Bay-Melville Range area who has now passed away at 78 years of age. Recognised internationally for its lovely, feathery fronds this palm makes a striking statement at 6-15m tall. It has a slightly bottle-shaped 20-25cm thick trunk. This self-cleaning palm, prominently displays its ring markings produced by the long fallen fronds, and produces black ribbed seeds encased in large orange-red fruit.
Best growing conditions: full sun- good drainage, will grow well in a variety of soils frost sensitive
- once established it will tolerate periods of drought
- do not overwater
- fertilise during the warmer months.
Landscape uses:
Good as a feature, specimen palm or avenue of palms. Planted in a grove this palm is stunning. Can be mistaken for Black Palm (Normanbya normanbyi). Grow this plant for conservation and preservation reasons.
